Wow! Just saw them for the first time at Terminal West in Atlanta. I have a new bass-player to add to my long list of favorites! Michael League is stunning. Mike Gordon, Tony Levin, Victor Wooten, JPJ, Roger Waters, Paul McCartney, Jaco...lots of styles I know...but I love bass. There are lots of styles in Snarky Puppy too. I hear Phish in there, along with King Crimson, ELO, Earth Wind & Fire, P-Funk, Pat Metheny, Weather Report etc...add all those up and then add 90% Snarkiness...and you get Snarky Puppy. They said they didn't like the word “Fusion”..but then they brought out (and shredded on) a Keytar! They are a fusion of jazz and rock whether they like it or not -- with another 10 genres sprinkled on top. Favorite new band I've seen in a long time!

I've seen Snarky Puppy twice and each performance has been incredible. Each musician is remarkable at his craft and together they create music full of funk, dynamism, soul and energy. I particularly look out for Cory's (the keyboardist) solos. The recent Family Dinner album is phenomenal.

A few years ago, they played in Philadelphia at The Fire. There was only a hand full of people there. Now 3 years later, they have a grammy, selling out shows, and overall killing it.

Their crowds are awesome. Very diverse. Appropriate considering their musical approach. They truly live in Bill Evans philosophy that jazz is a process not a genre—incorporating funk, soul, gospel, dance and many other genres.

On the intellectual end, Michel League (bassist and band leader) was featured in "The New Face of Jazz: An intimate look at today's living legends and the artists of tomorrow" by Cicily Janus. Worth checking out.

If you miss out on a Snarky Puppy show, you will regret it when your kids are talking about them.

Under Construction.

Snarky Puppy is a Brooklyn, New York-based instrumental fusion band led by Grammy Award-winning bassist, composer and producer Michael League. Formed in Denton, Texas in 2004, the band features a collective of nearly 40 musicians, referred to as "The Fam" on their recordings and tours. The musicians perform on a variety of instruments including guitars, pianos, keyboards, woodwinds, brass, percussion and strings. Many of the current and former band members were once students at the University of North Texas. The band's lineup is often in flux as members routinely perform with other artists such as Erykah Badu, Marcus Miller, Justin Timberlake, Kirk Franklin, Ari Hoenig, Roy Hargrove, Snoop Dogg and others. Currently the core touring unit is Michael League, Robert "Sput" Searight, Nate Werth, Shaun Martin, Cory Henry, Justin Stanton, Bill Laurance, Bob Lanzetti, Mark Lettieri, Mike Maher and Chris Bullock. Besides performing in a traditional setting, Snarky Puppy is committed to music education. While touring, the band has held over 100 clinics, workshops, and masterclasses in the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium.
